Kodiak Magog Boots Review

If you loved the Kodiak Thane, you are going to appreciate this one. The Kodiak Magog is another entry in their “Heritage” line, designed to bridge the gap between a rugged work boot and a stylish urban commuter.

But why choose this over a standard hiking boot? Simple: Style meeting function.

Most heritage boots (like Red Wings or Wolverines) look great but freeze your toes off in January. The Magog solves that problem by packing modern winter tech inside a classic leather shell. Read our full Kodiak Magog Boots Review to see if it stands up to the cold.

Kodiak Magog Boots Review: Deep Dive

Kodiak is a Canadian staple. They know cold weather. While many “fashion” boots claim to be winter-ready, the Magog actually has the specs to back it up. It feels substantial, warm, and surprisingly flexible right out of the box.

1. The Leather & Aesthetic

What we really loved about this boot is the oil-tanned look. The full-grain leather is rich, greasy (in a good way), and develops a beautiful patina quickly.

Because the leather is heavily oiled, it resists salt stains better than cheaper dry leathers, but you will still need to wipe them down after a snowy commute. It has that classic “welted” look, making it versatile enough to wear with jeans at a bar or chinos at a casual office.

2. Waterproofing That Actually Works

Unlike standard leather boots that rely solely on wax for water resistance, the Magog uses a double-layer defense:

  1. Treated Leather: The exterior sheds water and slush.
  2. Internal Membrane: Beneath the leather is a waterproof membrane. Even if water soaks the leather, it won’t reach your socks.

We found this makes the Magog an excellent introductory boot for guys who want dry feet without wearing clunky rubber rain boots.

3. Insulation: What Does “200g Thinsulate” Mean?

Inside the boot, you’ll find a microfiber lining backed by 200 grams of Thinsulate™ insulation.

The Reality Check: 200g is “Active Weight” insulation. It is perfect for walking to the bus, shoveling the driveway, or hiking. It is not meant for standing still in -20°F for hours (you would need 600g+ for that). It’s like wearing a thermal sweater on your feet—warm, but not suffocating.

4. Comfort & Insole

The interior uses a microfiber lining that feels similar to a high-end suede—soft and moisture-wicking. Kodiak includes a removable memory foam insole. It’s decent for casual walking, but if you plan on hiking long distances, we recommend swapping it out for a sturdier option like Superfeet.

5. The Outsole: City Traction

The Magog features a slip-resistant rubber lug outsole. Rubber is the ideal material for winter because it stays flexible in freezing temps (unlike plastic soles which get hard and slippery).

However, the lug pattern is relatively low-profile. This is great for not tracking mud into the house, but it’s not aggressive enough for deep, loose snow hiking. It shines on wet pavement and icy sidewalks.

Sizing Guide: Do They Run True to Size?

This is the most common question we get. The verdict is: They run slightly small/narrow.

If you plan to use these as your primary winter stompers, you will likely be wearing thick socks. Do yourself a favor and grab that extra half size for toe wiggle room. Air circulation keeps feet warmer than tight boots!

Pros & Cons

âś… The Good

  • Excellent “Heritage” style for the price.
  • Genuine waterproofing (Membrane + Leather).
  • Zero break-in time required.
  • 200g insulation is the “sweet spot” for city winters.

❌ The Bad

Final Verdict: Who is the Kodiak Magog For?

The Kodiak Magog is not a heavy-duty construction boot, nor is it a mountaineering boot. It is a fantastic urban winter boot.

It is perfect for the guy who loves the look of a Red Wing Iron Ranger but needs something that is actually waterproof and insulated for a Canadian or Northeast winter. It keeps you dry, keeps you warm while moving, and looks better the more you beat it up.
